A Year After the Winter Storm

Delivering groceries during Winter Storm Uri.

A year ago, Winter Storm Uri left many Central Texans without power and water. It left behind $195 billion dollars in damage, an economic impact some Texans are still feeling.

While most of our employees who lived in Austin lost power, our operations continued. Employees and volunteers made thousands of safety calls and visits. We distributed 1365+ donated meals to our clients. We provided water to hundreds of clients without running water.

An outpouring of support from our community and throughout the country raised $800,000+. This will allow Family Eldercare to assist individual clients year-round when they experience an emergency as well as respond to large-scale events affecting a greater number of our clients.

In the past year since Winter Storm Uri devastated Central Texas, Family Eldercare was able to take these actions made possible by our generous donors.

  • Assigned our Chief Strategy Officer, Chris Masey to head our resiliency planning, including planning for disasters like last winter’s storm.
  • Organized a COVID vaccination clinic in our building for clients who didn’t have internet to make a vaccination appointment themselves.
  • Gave out water during the hottest months of the Summer Fan Drive.
  • Gave out free masks and hand sanitizers during the Summer Fan Drive.
  • Our staff remained active and on-call through the 2022 winter freeze.
  • Worked closely with our partners to connect our unsheltered clients with safe accommodations during the 2022 freeze.
  • Distributed back-up battery power and emergency preparedness kits this month to our Lyons Gardens affordable housing community.
  • Performed virtual wellness checks throughout the 2022 storm for our most vulnerable clients.
