Who needs fans?
The recent floods remind us how quickly bad weather can turn deadly. It’s truly heartbreaking. Unfortunately, right here in the Austin area, the heat can also be fatal.
Central Texas who are most affected by the heat in are those who are already the most vulnerable in our community: older adults, individuals with disabilities or chronic medical conditions, low-income families, and those without access to air conditioning. Many of our clients live in homes that aren’t adequately cooled, making even a few hours of extreme heat dangerous.
Why are fans important?
- Indoor temperatures can quickly climb inside a poorly insulated home to be 10-15 degrees (or even more) above the outdoor temperature, particularly during prolonged heat waves.
- In a small, un-air-conditioned home during 100-degree weather, the interior temperature can easily reach 110°F or even higher.
- Temperatures exceeding 100°F can pose health risks like dehydration and heat stroke, especially for vulnerable individuals like the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Do Fans Really Make a Difference?
Yes. A simple box fan can make a real difference. They can be lifesaving.
A fan can lower the body temperature, prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and cool the body long enough to be able to sleep, which is essential for health.
How Can YOU Make a Difference?
You can help by supporting the Family Eldercare Summer Fan Drive. This annual campaign provides free box fans to our neighbors who need them most.
Whether you donate fans or funds, you’re helping save lives and bring comfort during the hottest months of the year.
Every contribution—big or small—helps us keep Central Texans safe and cool this summer.
Our goal is to reach 10,000 Central Texans who don’t have or can’t afford A/C. Here’s where we are now:
