Family Eldercare Statement on the Murder of Tyre Nichols

On Jan. 8, 2023, 29-year-old father Tyre Nichols was taken into police custody in Memphis after a traffic stop. Videos show he was violently beaten, kicked, sprayed in the face with pepper spray, and hit with a police baton while on the ground.

He was 100 yards from his home.

He died from his injuries just two days later.

The five Memphis police officers involved have been fired. They are being charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct, and official oppression in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols. This is an evolving story and more details are being revealed every day.

Family Eldercare believes that everyone should be treated with compassion and dignity. The use of violence as a way to oppress marginalized communities is unacceptable. There was a systematic failure to keep this young man safe. We stand with Tyre’s family as they seek justice and demand accountability. We are heartbroken for his young son, left fatherless after a “routine” traffic stop.

While Family Eldercare focuses primarily on older adults and people with disabilities, we fight for freedom, justice, and equity for everyone.

“Nobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free.”

– Fannie Lou Hamer, American Civil Rights Icon
