Letter to the Editor

Last month, our community lost a trailblazer with the passing of Bettie Naylor. Family Eldercare lost a friend and devoted advocate.

In 2011, we created the Bettie Naylor Fund for our Austin Gay and Lesbian Senior Services Initiative. The fund covers costs of in-home care for LGBT seniors who cannot afford that support otherwise.

We were very honored to learn that Bettie’s family — her partner Libby Sykora and daughter Sharron Naylor — asked the community to remember Bettie Naylor with gifts to Family Eldercare’s Bettie Naylor Fund.

The response from the community has been overwhelming and humbling. Checks as small as $25 and as large as $5,000 have arrived, often attached to a brief note about how much Bettie had touched the life of the person sending the gift.

Your generosity will allow her to continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who may not have family or loved ones to care for them as they age. What a beautiful tribute to someone who spent her own life lifting up the lives of others.
