Cycling Event benefiting Family Eldercare

Join Family Eldercare and the Central Texas cycling community for a day of cycling and celebrating life at all ages! Designed for the young and young at heart, the inaugural Gears for the Years is a non-competitive charity ride benefiting Family Eldercare. Whether you ride 25, 40, or 60 miles, your participation helps fund desperately needed client services in Travis and Williamson county.

Registration includes a t-shirt, fully-supported routes of 25, 40, or 60 miles including aid stations featuring food and drinks every 10-15 miles. Be sure to stick around after your ride for access to the after-party, featuring food trucks, a beer garden, vendors, awesome raffle prizes, and fun activities for young and old! Registration is $35 until midnight on September 1st for individual riders. Price will then increase to $45! If you do not wish to ride, but want to support our mission, you may donate here. Just put "Gears for the Years" in the notes!

 

Volunteers Needed! If you are unable to ride, but still want to help, please consider volunteering! Volunteers of all ages are welcomed, and several opportunities are perfect for groups! Read more and register here!

 

The Ride      

Date: October 22, 2017

Start Time: 7:30am

Location: Dell Diamond Parking Lot, 3400 E Palm Valley Round Rock, TX 78665

This ride will take place rain or shine, with the exception of dangerous weather conditions, such as lightening. Your registration is non-refundable and no deferrals are available at this time. Rest assured that even if we miss you at the start line, your registration fees will have a positive impact on the life of a client in need!

 

Route Options with Maps

All routes will be fully supported with aid stations every 10-15 miles and public safety officials at all major intersections. Riders will be required to obey all local traffic laws. Most of the course will be OPEN, so please ride smart, ride safe, and ride legally at all times!

Routes are subject to change due to factors such as construction, safety concerns, or other factors out of the control of ride organizers. We will update all registered riders ASAP should any changes occur, and appreciate your patience and understanding!

 

Aid Stations

Aid stations will be on all routes every 10-15 miles! Aid stations will feature snacks, such as bananas, oranges, cookies, and crackers, as well as water. Each aid station will be staffed by amazing volunteers provided by our sponsors and community, and there will be a contest for the best aid station, so keep your favorite in mind!

 

Aid Station Contest

To encourage participation, and make the experience the most fun possible for our sponsors and volunteers, there will be a contest for the best aid station. Costumes, signs, decorations, and FUN are encouraged! Be sure to keep your favorite in mind, as it will be up to our riders to VOTE for the winner at the post-race party. The winning station will receive a team prize and, of course, bragging rights!

 

SAG Support

SAG trucks will be available to pick up riders who experience mechanical failure or are otherwise unable to complete their route. SAG Support and pre-ride bike checks provided by Buck's Bikes. Bike checks are W-F at Buck's Bikes Round Rock location, or if an emergency pops up, you may visit them before the ride from 6a-7:30. If you need SAG support during the ride, be sure to call the phone number provided in your final rider email sent the week before the ride. (Write it down if you don't ride with your phone!)

 

Safety and Start/Cut-off Times

Start and finish times are enforced without exception. The City of Round Rock, TXDOT, and Williamson county safety and transportation personnel are allowing the use of their roadways, but must re-open lanes to traffic by agreed-upon times. We apologize for any inconvenience, but anyone late to the start by more than 10 minutes will not be permitted to continue! 

ALL participants on the course must wear a helmet! No exceptions! 

 

Parking

Parking is free and available to all participants and spectators at the Dell Diamond. To park, either turn on Harrell Dr., turn right at the Salt Lick, then drive past to the Dell Diamond parking lot on your right OR make a left U-turn at the light for the main Dell Diamond entrance (Telander Dr) and take the next  entrance to your right. Parking will be at the lot on your left. The main entrance will be coned off before the start and closed to traffic for the duration of the ride. See the site map for further details.

 

Raffle Prizes

Prizes will be organized in packages and buckets will be in front of each package for you to put tickets in. Raffle tickets are $5/each or 5/$20 and you can enter as many time as you’d like in each! Packages will be view-able at packet pickup, as well as before and during the event. Winners will be announced near the end of the after-party, but you do not have to be present to win. All proceeds will go directly to Family Eldercare’s client services, so you’ll have the chance at amazing gear while making a positive difference in the life of a senior or adult with disabilities. Raffle prizes currently include: Jaybird Wireless Freedom headphones, $15 RoadID Gift Cards, Bolle eyeware, Moxie Cycling gift cards, Southwest Airlines tickets, Lumos bike helmets, and much more! Food and Drink

Post-ride snacks and drinks will be available for all participants.

Riders who are 21 and older will be able to enjoy FREE beer, generously donated by Tito's Vodka,  Strange Land Brewery and Hops & Grain!

Activities

After the ride, enjoy music, vendor demos and samples, and hanging out in the company of our amazing cycling community. The party goes until 1pm, so stick around and enjoy the fun! 

Riders can enjoy FREE Post-Ride Massages from Atlas Holistic Wellness as well!

If you need to pick up for a friend, we need a copy of their ID and a note granting permission (a photo on your phone with a corresponding text works!) Be sure to check out the raffle packages when picking up your packet!

What the Ride Benefits

The goal for this event is not only fundraising, but to also raise awareness of our mission among those in the Central Texas community. The senior population in our area is the fastest growing in the country, and sadly, over 25% of those seniors and disabled adults live below the poverty line. Our organization has been around since 1982, and our un-duplicated services serve over 6,000 clients each year, providing them with the care and access they need to live safely and as independently as possible.This non-competitive ride will be structured for the young and young at heart to get their blood pumping and legs moving in honor of our clients who strive daily to maintain their independence and dignity through our services.

Family Eldercare offers many different programs to serve the needs of our clients. Our 6,000 clients are assisted through our impressive programs, such as Money Management, Guardianship, In-Home Care, Counseling, and Veteran's Fiduciary Services. Family Eldercare's services are greatly needed in Central Texas and a vast majority of our programs are completely un-duplicated, making our mission critically important to the health and well-being of the ever-increasing senior population in our area.
