80 Over Eighty Honoree – Mary Moody
Mary Moody’s story was shared by her daughter-in-law Julie. Julie nominated Mary because she has been volunteering and giving back to her community her entire life. Mary and her late husband of 48 years volunteered all over the United States. Mary shared that volunteering fed their souls and helped them love the many places they called home.
Mary’s neighborhood knows she is a passionate member of the Settlement Club, so they donate hundreds of items that she stores in her garage until she can transport them to be sold at the annual Settlement Garage Sale. Every year the garage sale’s proceeds support the Settlement Home for Children, and she has been their passionate supporter for almost fifteen years.
Mary is an amazingly active person and stays fit and healthy by working out with her trainer twice a week. She loves to travel, volunteer, and plan social get togethers, and most of all she loves spending time with her three sons, their beautiful wives and her six grandchildren.
Mary has many friends and is such a positive and happy influence on all those who know her. She is always discovering new things to do. She is in at least two book clubs, loves to travel, and plays Mahjong. In 2002, two years after her and her husband moved back to the Austin area, she joined The Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mary loves the old church building where she sings in the choir and has served as an Elder and Deacon. She shared that the design of the roof is modeled after an upside-down ship. So, when she looks up, she feels like god is saying, “I’ve Gotcha, and I’m going keep all of you afloat.”
