80 Over Eighty Honoree – Henry ‘H.L.’ Weiss

Henry “H.L.” Weiss is a member of both the Pfluger and Weiss families, two of the original German families who founded Pflugerville.

At 80 years young, H.L. continues to live on and farm both the original Weiss and Pfluger homesteads. The Weiss Farm is a historical oasis amidst the suburban sprawl that surrounds it. The farmhouse, built in 1908, serves as the backdrop to his portrait and is home to guinea hens, cows, goats, chickens, Jenny the donkey, and various farm cats.

Or you may find H.L. at the nearby Pfluger homestead, an ornate Victorian farmhouse in which various horror movies have been filmed, including one with then little-known actors Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey.

No matter where you may find him, H.L. will likely be surrounded by animals.

I like to be out in the fresh air and sunshine,” he says, “I like to sit and watch the animals. See them grow. I love being around the animals.”

H.L. has truly helped build Pflugerville with his own two hands. As a descendent of the first farming families, he has worked the fertile land and shared its bounty. He learned carpentry skills from his uncle and built many custom homes as Pflugerville grew. He looked after the safety of his community first as a National Guardsman and then by serving in the Pflugerville Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. H.L. was instrumental in promoting 4-H clubs in the area and was known throughout our region for raising Top Sheep. You also might be interested to know that along with Merle–his  wife of 53 years– H.L. started a square-dancing club called the Pfun Pfolks. And yes, that’s Pfun Pfolks with the PF.

H.L. is a humble soul. He tells us that he’s lived by a few simple rules: Do your best. Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today. And, help your neighbors.

H.L. is a beloved member of his family who instilled in them the value of hard work and community involvement.  He was nominated by Christine Bergren for his humility, grace, and kindness. For being an inspiration to his family and an asset to his community, Family Eldercare honors H.L. Weiss.
