80 Over Eighty Honoree – Dorothy Goodwin
Dorothy Goodwin’s story was shared by Family Eldercare’s Summer Fan Drive Team.
They shared her story because she is 81, all spunk, and one of Family Eldercare’s most dedicated Summer Fan Drive volunteers. Retiring as a nurse didn’t slow Dorothy down. Every summer since 2011, Dorothy has picked up donated fans from nearly all of Central Texas’ fire stations. She is always disappointed when there isn’t a fireman to greet her during her pickups. Dorothy can only fit 33 fans in her vehicle, so she makes multiple trips, 3,000 miles every summer. Since she has volunteered for the Summer Fan Drive, Dorothy has delivered more than 2,000 fans providing relief to 1,000 families.
What keeps a woman like Dorothy young at heart? It’s helping her community. Her social calendar is full. During the school year she mends books for the elementary school library, and you will always find her looking for yarn sales and knitting hats for children who are in the foster care system.
Dorothy is a devoted grandma, proud Longhorns fan, and has the energy of someone half her age. She says, “I’ve got the time, the energy, and the wherewithal to do it, so I figured I may as well put it to good use. There may come a time when I need someone to help me. So, I’m putting in my time now.”
