After seeing the need for affordable and independent senior living, Family Eldercare raised $5.6 million in private and public funding and opened Lyons Garden in October 2004. This 54-unit senior housing community is an award-winning model providing housing options to low-income seniors age 62+. Residents live independently in one-bedroom apartments and have access to a large community building and an expansive interior courtyard.

Resources Available to Residents
Residents have access to a professional Service Coordinator to help them with a variety of needs, from basic needs to health care services and other benefits. Coordinators also organize educational and social programs and volunteer activities. Additionally, residents benefit from partnerships with ACC-Eastview Campus Health Sciences Department and University of Texas' Schools of Nursing and Social Work. Social and recreational activities are available through the Lyons Gardens’ Resident Council. These activities include Bingo, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, pot lucks, garage sales, craft sales and more.
Amenities at Lyons Gardens include a large community room (available for resident activities and parties), TV/game/reading room (large screen TV, games and books available), a computer lab, kitchen (fully functioning kitchen space and pantry), raised gardens (two handicapped-accessible raised "square-foot" garden plots), laundry, playscape (on-site for visiting grandchildren), lobby/conversation space (space for visiting friends and family), pavillion with two gas grills and an exercise room.
A community housing development board oversees the project. One-third of the board members live in the surrounding neighborhood. The Lyons Garden's board includes experts in the field of housing and elderly issues.
