Low-Income Senior Housing

Background

After seeing the need for affordable and independent senior living, Family Eldercare started a campaign to raise funding to build Lyons Garden.  After raising $5.6 million in private and public funding, Family Eldercare opened Lyons Garden in October 2004.  This 54 unit senior housing community is an award winning model for affordable, independent senior living. Housing at the community is available to low-income seniors age 62+.  Residents live independently in 1 bedroom apartments and also have access to a large community building and an expansive interior courtyard.

Location

Lyons Garden is Ideally located at 2720 Lyons Road, at North Pleasant Valley and Webberville Road in Central East Austin.  This neighborhood has one of Travis County's highest concentrations of low-income older adults. The property is less than a block from Conley-Guerrero Senior Center and across from the Rosewood Zaragosa Medical Clinic.

Resource Available to Residents

Residents have access to a professional Service Coordinator to help them with a variety of needs. The Service Coordinator helps residents identify and acquire the services they need to remain self reliant.  The Coordinator offers assistance on all levels, including helping residents address basic needs, obtain health care services and secure benefits.  They also organize educational and social programs and volunteer activities.

Additionally, residents benefit from partnerships with ACC-Eastview Campus Health Sciences Department, and University of Texas' Schools of Nursing and Social Work.

Social and recreational activities are available through the Lyons Gardens’ Resident Council. These activities include BINGO, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, pot lucks, garage sales, craft sales, and more.
