Serving older adults, people with disabilities, and those who care for them
Lyons Garden, a model 54-unit senior housing community, officially opened its doors October 1, 2004.
Family Eldercare raised $5.6 million from public and private sources to design, build and operate a senior living center in Central East Austin. Lyons Gardens is fully accessible, affordable, independent living environment for older adults to "age in place." The center provide homes for seniors aged 62 or older, who have a very low income, and the ability to live independently or with the assistance of support services.
The senior living center is located on two and one-half acres in a Central East Austin neighborhood that has one of Travis County's highest concentrations of low-income older adults. The property is less than a block from Conley-Guerrero Senior Center and across from the Rosewood Zaragosa Medical Clinic.
Austin Community College-East view Campus will provide supervised nursing students from their Health Sciences Department to perform regular wellness screenings on site. In addition, ACC's Department of Hygiene has agreed to provide low-cost teeth cleanings and dental examinations.
The project epitomizes the essence of "S.M.A.R.T. Growth": - growth that is safe, mixed-income, accessible, reasonably-priced and transit-oriented.
The intergenerational project will incorporate the whole community of all ages, working together on projects and as families. A playscape is located on site for visiting grandchildren and neighbors, as well as a library reading room for neighborhood children to gather for reading and homework help by volunteers. A handicapped-accessible raised "square-foot" garden is planned by a master gardener from the Sustainable Food Center.
A community housing development board will oversee the project. One-third of the board members live in the surrounding neighborhood. The Lyons Garden's board composition includes experts in the field of housing and elderly issues.
