Family Eldercare is the lead agency for the Aging In Place Initiative, a collaborative project that is possible with the partnership of six other agencies. The program provides innovative strategies that link older adults to programs and services that address physical and mental health. The program's goal is to create a community where older adults are active and engaged.
Services through the Aging In Place Initiative are currently offered at five Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) properties; these apartments are available to persons who are elderly or disabled. Project staff work on site at these properties to coordinate services for residents, offer educational and skill building seminars, and organize volunteer opportunties.

New Special Program Offering
Aging In Place Initiative staff now offer workshops at four Housing Authority properties that teach residents to better manage their health conditions. Workshops offered are:
"Taking Control of Your Health"
"Taking Control of Your Health for Diabetics"
Both of these chronic disease self management classes have been shown to increase healthy habits and reduce the number of hospitalizations needed. Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks to teach seniors to set goals to take action to deal with pain and stress, manage medications, maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen, and work with doctors and nurses to improve personal health. These workshops teach seniors to manage health conditions including: arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and fibromyalgia.
Our certified instructors are also available to teach these classes at clubs and activity centers in Travis and Williamson county. Please call (512) 483-3553 or email Joyce Hefner for more information about any of the services offered through this program.
